Promotion of solar energy for demonstration and conservation of biodiversity, Jozani-Chwaka, Zanzibar

The project aims at replacing diesel powered generators with solar power as the main source of energy for water pumping and lighting in the village. Solar energy technology is adopted in order to check biodiversity loss in an adjacent forest as for a long time now, villagers cut down trees in the forest in order to get money for buying fuel to run diesel powered generators.

Capacity - Building Component

5 villagers will be trained on how to operate and maintain the solar facility. The villagers will become local technicians capable of servicing and repairing the system.

Notable Community Participation

Communities will provide all the labour that is required for the project. In addition, the communities will provide security services for solar modules and other equipment, which will be installed

The project is located in a remote village where indigenous people live. Therefore, project implementation would involve indigenous people.

Gender Focus

Water pumping improves accessibility to water. Since, in Africa, drawing of water is essentially, a women's task, water pumping activity will reduce water fetching tasks on the part of women.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Workshops would be organized during and after project implementation to promote public wareness on solar energy technologies and how they relate to global environment.

Project Results

(1) Project successfully replaced diesel powered generator with solar power as the main source of energy in the area.

(2) Project successfully reduced loss of biodiversity , which in the past was being cut down, deliverately in order to generate income for operating the electric generator.
