Sustainable Management of the Lufilyo River Basin Environment and Ecosystem in Rungwe District

Over the years, particularly with the increase of population and human activities, the Lufyilo River Basin has experienced wide spread destruction of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem. Vegetation is cleared for agriculture and trees are cut down for firewood and building poles. The project aims at increasing awareness on conservation of forests and other vegetation that are of great biodiversity and catchment importance within the Lufilyo river basin. Lufyilo river empties its waters into Lake Nyasa, which is an international water body.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

A total of 500 farmers, 100 teachers and 150 village leaders will be trained in biodiversity conservation skills, poverty alleviation strategies and good governance practices.

Notable Community Participation

All project labour inputs would be provided by local communities. In addition, local communities who own the project will take lead roles in project execution activities.

Gender Focus

Establishment of water wells and tree nurseries for woodlots both aim at reducing workload on the part of women.

Project contributed to the implementation of the environment policy.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Project financing was shared between SGP, local Government and local communities. Joint project financing promoted partnership between key project players.

The project will benefit native people in the target area. Most of these people have lived in the locality for all their lives.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Training on conservation of the river ecosystem that empties its water into Lake Nyasa, which is an International water body, will demonstrate how local environment is linked to Global Environment therefore promote public wareness of global environment.

Project Results

- Project succeeded to increase public awareness on the importance of refraining from practices that promote soil erosion.

- Adoption of water and soil conservation practices reduced the rate of siltation in river Lufilyo. By extension, rate of siltation was reduced in Lake Nyasa, which is an international water body.

- Project demonstrated on how community woodlots for fuelwood could be established for wider replication.
