Capacity Building for project cycle management for CBOs and NGOs that operates around Mt. Kilimanjaro

For many years CBOs and NGOs in Kilimanjaro region have been operating using funds collected from membership fees. Thus most of them do not have the capacity to design a project proposal and also have low capacity in project management. It has been difficult for COMPACT Project to receive quality project proposals resulting into limited projects for funding. This project will help these NGOs and CBOs to build their capacity in designing project proposals not only to qualify for funding for the COMPACT project but also for other donors. It also aims at strengthening operational capacity of CBOs and NGOs that participate in implementation of the COMPACT project in and around Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Mt. Kilimanjaro is a World Heritage Site. Therefore strategic conservation of the mountain will contribute to the conservation of the global environment.

Project will increase capacity for self management, which is critifcal for participation in policy dialogue.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project has a direct bearing on sustainable livelihoods because it is aimed at increasing performance in implementation of projects. Most of the projects that are implemented under the COMPACT project focusses on linking environment Conservation and sustainable livelihoods.

Capacity - Building Component

The project is wholly capacity building oriented. The project will organize seminars for leaders of CBOs and NGOs on management of project cycle operations. In addition, training seminars will be organized on report writting and funds raising strategies.

Policy Influence

The project will influence policy on CBOs and NGOs registration based on their future sustainability.

Gender Focus

The training project emphasizes on the need to promote gender equity in development. Emphasis is on designing development projects which promotes gender equity through empowering of women and reduction of women workload.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Training cost was met by GEF/SGP through the COMPACT Project. Participants met own logistical costs estimated at 5% of project direct costs.

Replication of project activities

Training of CBOs and NGOs in proposal write up has been replicated.

Project sustainability

Training of CBOs and NGOs in proposal writes up will enhance their capacity to undertake sustainable activities.

Notable Community Participation

Twenty (20) participants from community organizations namely NGOs and CBOs will participate in this training project. The training will focus on sharpening skills of NGOs and CBOs in project formulation, Designing, implementation, evaluation, fund raising and report writing.

Project Results

Project had two phases. Phase I covered training on fund raising techniques for community based groups. Phase II was to cover project cycle Management. However, the Project was terminated after theimplementaion of phase I due to management problems of the proponent who was facilitating this training.
