Dissemination of improved stone made firewood stoves in Kilimanjaro region

The project aims at reducing the consumption of fuel wood by the communities living adjacent to the Mt. Kilimanjaro forests reserve through the use of stone made fuel efficient stove. The use of fuel-efficient stoves will reduce the consumption of fuel wood by 75% per household. The use of this stone made cooking stoves will contribute in conserving the Mt. Kilimanjaro forests as 60% of the fuel woods used in Moshi town are believed to come from the forests around Mt. Kilimanjaro .This project will promote wide use of low cost fuel wood efficient stone made stoves through capacity building to locals on how to construct these stoves. This project will also promote the use of these stoves through private sectors.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

50 local technicians will be trained on how to build the stoves. Skills acquired would be used to build the stoves to interested clients at a fee. The project will organize sensitization seminars to develop clients' interest in the use of fuel efficient stoves.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Fuel wood efficient stoves will reduce the consumption of fuel wood thus contribute in conserving Mt. Kilimanjaro forest.

Notable Community Participation

Local communities will participate by developing action plans, monitoring and evaluation indicators and providing systematic feedback on the performance of the stoves.

The project is linked to income generation activities. Trained local technicians will contruct the cooking stoves at a fee. This will generate income for them. Furtheremore, fuelwood efficient stoves will reduce the consumption of woof by 50%. This implies cost saving which can be used for livelihood expenditures.

The project will provide a policy feedback on the effectiveness of stone-made fuel efficient stoves for reduction of fuel wood in forest conservation.

Project Results

The use of stones for making efficient cooking stoves has been adopted by many community members as they are low costs. These stoves has reduced the consumption of fuel wood in many households by 50% this serve the household form using 15Tsh per month to 7,000Tsh per month.

The project contributes in the conservation of Mt. Kilimanjaro forest by reducing the rate of tree cutting for fuel wood. This has also contributed to conservation of mountain biodiversity. A household using fuel wood efficient cooking stove saves 1,152 Kg of wood per year which is equivalent to 20 trees per year.

The project has trained 50 villagers? men and women on the construction of these stoves, this training has created job to these people.
