Consolidation of Umbwe Onana Irrigation Project

This project on consolidation of Irrigation activities in Umbwe Onana irrigation canal aim at expanding area under irrigation by extending water distribution canals to new farms.
Expanded irrigation facilities will increase the number of farmers in irrigation and reduce the number of people depending on agriculture for their livelihood as well as reduce number of un-employed people in Umbwe society.

Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

Community members will contribute labor, cash and materials during project implementation. Community members will also be responsible for running the scheme. Community members will elect leaders who will be trained in leadership skills.

Capacity - Building Component

One hundred (100) farmers will be trained in water management techniques. Twenty (20) village technicians shall be trained in operation and maintenance of the canal. One hundred (100) members of Water Users Association will be trained in good governance.

Gender Focus

One of the project's goal is to empower men and women to benefit from improved irrigation.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project is increasing crop production: Maize from 900 to 1800 kg/acre; Beans: from 650 to 900 kg/acre. In addition, the project will facilitate shifting from subsistence farming to commercial agriculture thereby increase household incomes.

The project provided positive feedback on use of small scale irrigation in alleviating food poverty.

Project sustainability

The project provided training to farmers on marketing skills, soil and water conservation and operation and maintenance of the irrigation canal.

The project will be linked with the GEF project on Sustainable land Management in Kilimanjaro.

The project would benefit local people who are natives of the Umbwe Onana village.

sustainable Irrigation promotes conservation of Mt. Kilimanjaro natural resources. Since Mt. Kilimanjaro is a World Heritage sensitization will be linked to conservation of global environment

Project Results

(1) Project successfully expanded the irrigation scheme by lining 400 meters more and built 5 division boxes which has improve the efficiency of water distribution by 60% from 20%

(2) Project enabled farmers to increase crop production which led to increased household incomes.

(3) Project has provided training in soil and water conservation to the local communities to improve on farm water management. Project has also trained farmers on marketing skills and group legal aspects.

(4) Project has contributed to the conservation of Mt. Kilimanjaro forest through sustainable natural resource management.
