Rehabilitation of the Osanya Irrigation Canal and water reservoir for irrigation in Mande Village

This project intends to rehabilitate 1.5 Km of the Osanja irrigation canal in order to alleviate poverty among Makupa village which is located closer to Mt.Kilimanjaro forest. The project will make the agriculture througth irrigation a sustainable economic activity and thus reduce posibilities of people living through illegal logging of timberfrom the natural forest. The rehabilitation of this irrigation canal and its water reservoir will help 500 families to engage in agriculture. The rehabilitation of this canal will also support the communties to engage in production of other cash crops including coffee.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

All farmers in the area (500 households) will be trained on new skills for water and soil conservation. Farmers will also be trained on marketing management to enable them undertake farming in a profitable way.

Notable Community Participation

All labour required in the rehabilitation of the irrigation canal and water reservoir will be provided by communities on self help basis. Furthermore, communities have their own mechanism for operating and sustainably maintaining the irrigation infrastructure.

Project financing was shared between COMPACT project, District Government and Local communities.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Rehabilitation of the canal will increase water for irrigation. This will ensure food security as well as family incomes for sustainable llivelihoods.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project is based in a remote rural area where native people live. The project is therefore benefitting the local people who have lived in the target area for all their lives.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The project promotes protection of Mt. Kilimanjaro, which is a World Heritage Site by engaging farmers in sustainable utilization of the resources of the mountatin such as water for profitable agriculture.

Policy Impact

The project provided a positive feedback on the effectiveness of small scale irrigation farming for increased crop production and household income.

Gender Focus

The project provides equal opportunity for men and women. In addition, availability of water help women and children to alleviate the burden of searching for water.

Project sustainability

The project will be sustainable based on a contribution of 2000Tsh made by all community members who are undertaking irrigation after the formation of water users association.

Replication of project activities

The rehabilitation of irrigationa canals has been replicated by the Government througth District irrigation departiments.

This project has influence policy on food security througth small scalle irrigation activities.

Project Results

(1) Project increased availability of food crops and introduce one new cash crop (Cadamon)

(2) The project ahs Increased food crop of which the sell of surplus provide families with income thus reduce income poverty

(3) The Project accomplish the construction of the nigth water reservoir with the capacity os 2200m cube with canal lining of 340 meters out of 600meters which were intended and thus this project required additional funds.

(4) Young men who were un employed and discouraged from doing agricultural activities get to be involvement in agriculture, this is an indicator to reduction of envolvement of un employed people in illegal harvesting of timber in the forests of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
