Preparation of Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park General Management Plan

The preparation of General Management Plan for Kilimanjaro National Park sets forth the management objectives and actions that would ensure the long-term viability of the mountain ecosystem. This exercise will involve different stakeholders of Mt. Kilimanjaro and also the communities in planning for the future of the mountain, its natural resources and ways in which the communities will benefit from the mountain resources.
The Project intends to help management authority of Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park develop a General Management Plan that takes into consideration strategies that would contribute in mitigating human impact on the park, ensure habitat connectivity and focused on applied research to direct the management actions.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Any General Management Plan (GMP)must take into consideration livelihood issues for adjacent communities. Therefore, it is expected that the new GMP will have provision for improving livelihoods of communities around Mt. Kilimanjaro

Policy Impact

Project intends to contribute to the involvement of local communities in the management of Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park, which is consistent with the widlife policy which advocates for involvement of local communities in the management of National Parks.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The GMP will consider the use and management of the Mounatin by the natives who have been living in villages around the mountain.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The GMP will ensure the qualities of Mt. Kilimanjaro as a World Heritage Site are mainatained. The GMP formulation process and tGMP itself would be used as tools for promoting public awareness of Global Environment.

Policy Influence

The Project will infuency policy on Management of Protected areas in the country.

Gender Focus

The new GMP is expected to give preference to activities that promote gender equity and community benefits.

Project sustainability

There will availability of information for the park planning and management through its resource database.The information to be collected will benefit local,regional,national and international communities over a period of 10 years

Capacity - Building Component

Through discussions and consensus building on preparation of the General Management Plan, community members will develop negotiation skills that they may use in future interactions with external partners.

Project Results

The preparation of Mt. Kilimanjaro GMP is expected to prioritize ecosystem components and threats which will identify key conservation priorities.

Already 5 key conservation targets have been identified. These targets include conservation of species such as elephants and big mammals in the area, conservation of habitats which includes the glacier and other eco climatic zones as well as the conservation of water catchments and its catchment values.
The GMP will also consider the improvement of community environment conservation education and community involvement in the management of the park.

The project was terminated before completion due to slow rate of implementation resulting from changes in implementation strategy from General Management Plan to Ecosystem Management Strategy.The project was completed by using TANAPA's funds.
