Consolidating a school biogas project, Lomwe Secondary School

The project aims at consolidating a school biogas system by installing a biogas balancing tank in order to regulate flow of gas and minimize wastage. Lessons learnt from this institution as a result of the first grant has been passed on to the following stakeholders: teachers, students, regional and district actors, Ministry of Education officials and communities around this institution. Some of the results are: reduction of fuelwood consumption, cost saving and cooking efficiency.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

Biogas lessens women drudgery. It frees women from back breaking fuelwood collection tasks. It also reduces cooking time.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Biogas reduce GHG emmissions. this help to reduce atmospheric pollution, which has a direct linkage to the Global Environment.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Biogas systems reduce indoor pollution. This contributes to making people healthy. It also produced slurry which is an organic fertilizer and appropriate for crop production.

Capacity - Building Component

Demonstration sessions are expected to build capacities in installation, operation and maintenance of biogas system.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Lessons given by the project benefit communities that live around the school. Most of these people are natives.

Notable Community Participation

The primary objective of this project is to show through demonstration that public institutions could use biogas for cooking instead of fuelwood. school adjacent communities will be involved through participating in the demonstration sessions.

Policy Impact

The project successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of biogas systems as an alternative source of energy to fuelwood. The succesful demonstration was a positive policy feedback for the energy policy, which advocates for the wider use of renewable energy technologies for cooking such as biogas.

Project Results

- Project demonstrated that it is possible for a secondary school with over 500 students to cook on biogas

- Project provided policy feedback that biogas could succesfully substitute fuelwood as a key source of energy for households as well as Institutions. This is in line with the National Energy Policy that advocates for wider adoption of non-fuelwood energy sources for cooking and heating.
