Conservation of Medicinal plants and Promotion of Indigenous Knowledge and Local Helath Traditions among Rural Communities in Wayanad
The project aims to achieve conservation of bio-diversity of wayanad through awareness generation and sustainable production and use of herbal medicines and promotion of indigenous knowledge, as an alternate health care system among the resource poor communities in Wayanad.
Major activities include:-
? Awareness generation and capacity building.
? Community based ex-situ conservation of medicinal plants.
? Extending use of medicinal plants by community.
? Developing medicinal plant enterprise.
? Enterpreneurship development.
? Formation of networks --- of SHGs, farmers groups.
? Starting of a treatment centre.
? Resource centre development; documentation and validation of indigenous knowledge and practices.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
? Conservation of rare, endangered and threatened species is given emphasis in the community based ex-situ conservation.
? Extensive promotion of cultivation of medicinal plants by farmers will reduce sustainability the pressure on forest that will enable the protection of rich genetic species.
? Degraded lands on the outskirts of forest will also be utilized for medicinal plants concervation.
Notable Community Participation
Awareness and capacitation programmes will be focused on people?s organizations like SRGs as well as other NGOs. So will be the distribution of seeds and seedling. The cultivation of herbs will be done by the rural communities. Similarly, the documentation and validation of indigenous knowledge also will be carried out with community participation.
