Demonstrating Sustainable Community based Management of Solid and Bio-Medical Waste
To Create awareness and a sense of commitment to a clean city among the citizens.To Facilitate the creation of sustainable neighborhood groups that can initiate, manage and own their neighborhood garbage disposal system and also the civic services through a corpus fund.Enable and interface between the neighborhood groups and the civic bodies and to supplement the work of municipality.Demonstrate the feasibility of the campaign in two pilot area and demonstrate the people?s willingness to pay for improved services in that area, and carry over the model to other parts of the city.To demonstrate the concept of recycled paper plant in Patna.To begin a process of Hospital waste management.Organize the rag pickers who work with the garbage, and take significant steps their working conditions and the quality of their lives.Development and dissemination of educational material through meeting, wall writing and other means of IEC.Segregation of garbage at the household level and designing appropriate trolleys for collection of segregated garbage.Establishing 50 kg. Recycled paper plant and establishing market channels.Catalyzing setting up of common facility for hospital in the city.· To Organize training for trainers and rag pickers and bringing out educational material.Formation of committee of residents responsible for overseeing the functioning of the garbage collection and disposal in both the localities

Project Characteristics and Results
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
A Credit Cooperative has been established under the project servicing the credit needs of the ragpickers. The Cooperative is managed by the Federation of the ragpickers and the groups have contributed towards forming the corpus fund. The cooperative also takes care of the life and health insurance of the ragpickers.
Replication of project activities
A contract for total sanitation for two wards of Patna has been awarded to NIDAN by the Patna Municipal Corporation from 15th October 2005. Other SGP project partners working with solid waste management under the MoEF-GTZ Eco-cities program have also visited the NIDAN project and has adopted the model for replication their respective areas.
