Community based development of an information base and preliminary management plan for the Apatani Plateau and
Talle Valley
The project area is the Apatani Plateau and Talle valley in Arunachal Pradesh in Northeastern India. Arunachal Pradesh is home to 27 ethnic/indigenous communities ("Scheduled Tribes") with distinctive cultures and rich traditions. Of these, the Apatani are considered to be a very progressive community. Adjacent to the Apatani settlements is the Talle Valley, which is an extension of the Apatani Plateau. It is a densely forested area rich in plant and animal life with 274 species of birds and 560 plant species. There are also a few endangered species in area like the Clouded Leopard, Snow Leopard, Mountain Otter and Macaque. The project objective was to develop an information base and yield a preliminary management plan for the Talle Valley and Apatani Plateau in Arunachal Pradesh that was based on solid data and drew upon the traditional tribal use and practices of the Apatani People. This would strengthen community support for the environmental protection work and provide a demonstration of sustainable forestry for other communities in Arunachal Pradesh. SEED data collection was used to formulate the documentation and justification of the project guided by experts. Documentation of wildlife was done with the help of village volunteers and school students using modern technologies to capture the images of little known wildlife species in the area. Village volunteers were involved in the data collection that included flora and fauna in the Talle Valley sanctuary, land use and ownership in the Apatani Plateau, traditional Apatani forestry practices including existing sustainable cultivation of bamboo and blue pine practices and other additional information. Workshops for community volunteers were conducted to offer them training in data collection techniques for documenting flora and fauna. Experts from SFRI, Forest Department etc. facilitated the training program.
