Community based sustainable development on the holistic perspective of the Contour-Hedgerow (inter cropping) farm-ing Technology (CHFT).
Community based sustainable development on the holistic perspective of the Contour-Hedgerow (inter cropping) farm-ing Technology (CHFT).
This project was undertaken to develop prototypes of cost effective CHFT at different elevations in the project area and to assess its impact on crop productivity and soil erosion. Nitrogen-fixing species were sown as for the hedgerow. Double hedgerows were planted at a distance of 30-60 cms. Their height was maintained up to knee level. Alleys were planted with suitable short and long term crop species. Mulch of hedgerow was applied in alleys for natural decomposition and slow release of nutrients to the soil. The entire project involved farmers for large-scale replication of the technology.
Project description
The project first identified progressive local farming groups of farmers, artisans, authorities and local leaders. A group of farmers was also formed to strengthen and promote marketing skills and networking for the projects.
The project served the following objectives
? To promote innovative inputs of local response and sensitize about appropriate technology inputs and sustainable inputs
? To demonstrate high replicability and sustainable management of local resources
? Reproduction and enhancement of other appropriate technology in an integrated manner with CHFST
? To build local capacity to implement sustainable development strategies among the beneficiaries for large scale replication of the technology

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Due to drastic reduction in the Jhum fallow cycle in the recent times the productivity of the land had gone down. The erosion hazards due to heavy rainfall further increased the drudgery of the people. To manage shifting cultivation areas into productive land was a global challenge.
