Ladakh's economy has been changing ever since it was opened to the rest of the world. Before getting into the grind of a developing region this was a community that thrived on subsistence farming. As such there were no garbage problems because waste was organic and got reused in the fields; there were no packaged goods to create that extra waste. For the last couple of decades Ladakh has been struggling to manage its waste. Like in the rest of the country even basic garbage management systems are not in place, people will usually either burn or bury the waste. The organisation took an initiative of collection, segregation and recycling of this waste. A detailed analysis is also done to assess the impact on reducing air, land and water pollution. For instance, burning of 1 kg paper generates approx. 200 grams of Carbon, so the burning of 500kgs of watste paper+ 150kgs newspapers would generate= 200*650=130,000grams / 130 kilograms of carbon (prevented from bring released per month). On an average, organisation also collect 150kgs of old newspapers and magazines monthly and distribute these to be made into paper bags. 1 newspaper=100 paper bages, that generate 150 bundles of (100 each) of different size. These bags are then marketed in the local bazar and are now an alternative for plastic bags. The project's importane aspect is it has a community base and 99% of the people involved in it are locals. For women, there are no restrictions in society on women to venture out and establish themselves. Infact among the whole community disabled people were probably more marginalised. With all the efforts it is a recent development to make an education system, training and support to disabled so they too can earn a livelihood.
