Improvement of Ecological Situation of Liolinga Pond
This practical environmental project developed by the Kaulakiai community initiative seeks to improve the water quality of the Liolinga Pond, which lies in the middle of the village, and which is very important for local people for recreation and aesthetic purposes. Liolinga stream runs into Dubysa river, so joining the Baltic Sea at the end.
There are about 1000 inhabitants in Kaulakiai, and this village is famous for the tradition to take care of the surrounding environment, especially of the house yards and the village center. However, on one of the shores of the Liolinga pond there are many houses that do not have proper conditions for manure storage. 59 persons live in those houses, mostly pensioners and unemployed. They pollute the pond intensively, as well as their kitchen-gardens, fertilized in an environmentally wrong way, and kept at the very vicinity of the pond, also influence the quality of water.
Project aims to construct manure storage facilities in six houses that are at critical conditions and the most close to the pond. This will serve as demonstration of proper storage of the manure and farming. Kaulakiai community and neighboring communities will receive training on of sanitation and good farming practices in a sustainable way. The thick line of trees will be planted between the house gardens and the pond in order to build a natural barrier for transition of nutrients and pollutants. The trees will also improve the scenery of the village.
In the framework of project the village park will be maintained. The so-called ?Health Path? decorated with wooden sculptures will be renovated, waste bins will be placed. Local school will do the monitoring of pond water quality. Community will gather for voluntary cleaning of pond surroundings.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Farmers living and farming next to the pond as well as all members of the community will be educated on the good agricultural practices code and will learn how to implement these measures in practice.
