Working with 16 primary schools to plant 300,000 indigenous trees on 4 hills in Rusinga Island: Part II
In this project 16 primary schools will be engaged in planting 320,000 indigenous trees on public hills in Rusinga island, and also plant woodlots in their own school compounds. While they will provide free labour for planting, out of school youths will be engaged to water the seedlings for a period of 12 months. As an incentive, the project will partner with the 16 schools to meet some of their own school oriented needs such as books, libraries, classroom repairs, building toilet blocks etc.

As a result of this project, the 4 major hills of Rusinga island will have full cover of indigenous tree species that used to be there. This will alter the microclimate of the area. The woodlots in the 16 schools will further green Rusinga and mitigate the fuel wood to the island.
