During project implementation the local population will have an opportunity to diversify the income sources by providing tourist services.
During the project implementation it will be emphasized that the Pentelium Eduardi is an endemic flower for the region of Central Asia and Southern Asia and its conservation is a direct contribution to the global biodiversity conservation.
Capacity - Building Component
During the project implementation the local population will obtain possibilities to gain new skills related to providing services to tourists, developing and implementing methods of sustainable use of local natural resources, introducing nature protection activities, combined with traditional household activities. The executing NGO is gaining experience of implementing a project in the area of ecological tourism.
Notable Community Participation
The population actively supports the project idea because there is a tradition of conducting holiday of Aygul flower. At the same time the population does not realize clearly the causes of dissapearance of Aygul flower, does not even compare the disappearance with their own activities even during the celebrations when the big bouquets are gathered and the flower habitat is used for fires and pastures. Nevertheless, while developing the project proposal, the local population came to the necessity of conducting flower conservation activities such as introducing restrictions for the period of animal grazing and fencing the plot where the gathering of flower will be prohibited.
Gender Focus
There is no clear gender approach in the project although one of the NGOs ? partners are headed by a woman, and the work on involving schoolchildren in the project is mainly done by female teachers.
Project Results
Potential global benefits of the project
Thanks to the project the rare kind of flower Aygul (Pentelium Eduardi), which is included in the Red Book, around the Aygul-Tash and Baul villages were preserved and protected through the local authority?s regulation to protect its habitat, pasture regulation, organizing flower nursery, develop places for ecotourism and public awareness about environment issue.
Link the practice of sustainable livelihoods to a GEF focal area
Overgrazing on the slopes allows degrading of land sources. Project was directed on demonstration of alternative or additional to cattle-breeding economic activity. During project implementation the local population had an opportunity to diversify the income sources by providing tourist services.

Replication in other communities or regions
This project is not appropriate for replicating in analogous geographic conditions countries because the flower Aygul (Pentelium Eduardi) is endemic and have limited natural habitat. There are no plans on up-scaling the project to a medium-sized GEF.
Links between this project and the overall GEF
Links between this project and the overall GEF follows from public awareness on global environment problems. During the project implementation it was emphasized that the Pentelium Eduardi is an endemic flower for the region of Central Asia and Southern Asia and its conservation is a direct contribution to the global biodiversity conservation
Influence on government policy
There is no obvious influence on government policy on National level but the local authority?s regulation to protect habitat, pasture regulation, organize flower nursery, develop places for ecotourism and public awareness about environment issue is illustration of project influence on the local level.

Products/services generated by the project
Developed 2 places for coming tourists during the blossoming period

Assessment of impact of project in the GEF focal area
Project corresponds to Operational Program 1 GEF/SGP ?Arid and Semi-Arid Zone Ecosystems? and provides biodiversity preservation through local authority?s regulation and nursery organization.
