I. The the first progress report was received on September 25 February , 2005, with the following immediate outputs:

- Acquired baseline data and resources inventories in Me Jarim District ( with list of species , water
quality , meteorological condition , livelihood of communities and concerned other active organizations)
- 100 youth members undergoing training with 40 members proceeding with the participation in field
practice.
- 25 tons of produced organic fertilizer , available for 60 members in 9 villages

II. The project was visited on Friday , March 25, 2005 , with the following findings and observation:
One of the 11 target village, Baan Nam Wa was visited. It is situated in the fringe of the Mae Jarim National Park which is one of the 16 forest reserves in the Doi Phu Kha-Mae Yom complex. The complex covers the Nan watershed, one of the main four tributaries of the Gulf of Thailand?s Chao Phaya River. Discussing with project leaders and witnessing some environment campaign in the village implied continuous environment activities for about a few years in the areas. There were one conservation zone along the river and several community regulations to protect environment written on public boards.

The next participating adjacent village to visit was Baan Na Charoen where remain of organic fertilizer facility was witnessed. The produced fertilizer had been distributed to project members and sold to non-project members situated within a few km. There are 11 such facilities in the project.

The effect of organic fertilizer was witnessed in another participating village, Baan Dong Phaiwan, also situated along the Wa River. Here, one project leader had successfully followed the new theory of agriculture where the whole plot of paddy field was turned into sustainable, integrated farming. Even though the theory was implemented several years before GEF/SGP intervention, the project leader was very supportive to SGP through the production and promotion of fertilizer to others. It was estimated that only 10 % of community members understood and were keen to turn to eco-friendly agriculture. That was fair enough when compared to the budget allocated of about 10 %. The rest was for capacity building, water quality monitoring by youth groups and forging the river protection network along its 300 or so km. long.

As it was a summer session, and due to constraint of time, activities on monitoring water quality was not witnessed. However, through discussion with project leaders, it was made known that the quality at middle portion is better than upstream and downstream all of which has its own influential factors.

Note: the project planned the participatory evaluation upon completion in November 2005, after which final reports would be submitted for perusal and release of the final disbursement.

III. The completion report was received on October 2 , 2006. The details are as follows:

Activities carried out :

1. Launching studies/surveys on the geography of the river ecosystem and the root causes of degradation
2.Launching capacity-building and networking activities to conserve the river ecosystems.
3. Launching the followings:
-Dissemination of useful data & information
-Issuance of monthly newsletter
-Traditional Festival ? Enliven the Wa River? and Mobile Forum

Results:

1. Emergence of tangible data & information, existing & updated environmental degradation situation
and its tendency for use in formulating action plan
2. Key leaders carrying out conservation planning
3. Increased capacity of community members (85%) in formulation of action plan, role ,mission and
approach
4. Continuous water quality monitoring process in Nam Wa River and its tributaries
5. Emergence of a group of 60 in nine villages carrying out new theory agriculture resulting in
production of 25 tons applied on 10-ha farming land and saving about Baht: 38,750/year
6. Produced and disseminated 500 copies twice resulting in continuous building awareness of
community network
7. Emergence of one relief map

Dissemination / Public Relation of Project

The project organized dissemination / public relation both within communities and their network.

Participatory Evaluation:
Participants: 50 persons representing community members, public sector and other major
stakeholders
Methods: Open forum lasting for one day
Impact: 1. The project contributed to capacity-building and conservation awareness-raising
process for community members. Community members played more leading role , in
stead of following centralized public policy as it was the case before the
commencement of the project.
2. The project led to the forging of environment network which was bound by
common activities
3. Conservation trend for the river and its tributaries where the location was a
model for learning

Future Plan: Community network in four villages agreed that successful conservation of the river
required cooperation and participation from other villages situated along the river
flowing through four districts. Representatives from these areas would be
invited to join open forum(s) for better insight and next step of implementation.
