Collective Conservation of Nam Wa River at Mae Jarim District
Collective Conservation of Nam Wa River at Mae Jarim District
Originating in the Dan Lao Range common with the Laotian border, Nam Wa River runs its course through various districts in Nan Province, converging with Nan River which is an ecological portion of the Gulf of Thailand/South China Sea. For generations, the river has been supplying water of good quality for agriculture and household as well as fishes for consumption.

According to a recent preliminary survey , land-based activities in target location have contributed
to the degradation of the river. De-vegetation and unregulated application of chemicals in agricultural practice are two major activities causing erosion , untimely water flow-rate and inferior water quality. However, there has been no organizations/agencies showing eagerness to address the problems.

Realizing the imminent threats, the Friend for Life Group initiated the project to build capacity of target population at Mae Jarim , one of the four districts through which the river runs. Capacity-building , successive action plan and public communication undertaken in this district would induce and pave a conservation way for the others situated along the river in the province and those downstream.

Project participants and/or beneficiaries:

Population of about 15,000 people in Mae Jarim District are direct and indirect beneficiaries.
The following organizations and agencies are major stakeholders: Khon Bor Wa Foundation, Mae Jarim District Public Health Office, Mae Jarim National Park,Doi Phu Kar Nationa Park,Mae Jarim District Agricultural Office, Nan River Development Project under the Royal Initiative.
