The project activities relate to the main occupation of target population.
Notable Community Participation
The project was intitiated by community members where each target village member has its says through two representatives since the conceptual stage of project.
Capacity - Building Component
There are this components in term of both technical and institutional aspect.
Gender Focus
There has been no specific planning on gender issue.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Through continuous interaction with other stakeholders, awareness of global environment would be promoted to some degree, in a long term.
Project Results
1. The progress report was submitted on on December 24 , 2004, with following immediate results:
- 60 project members realizing adverse effect of chemicals upon health and being able to produce
organic insect repellant for their own uses ? 60 litres produced
- Emergence of six groups of organic fertilizer production with 4,000 kg. output
- Reduction of chemical fertilizer by 2 bags/family
- Average increase of paddy yield by 15 % ( from 1,875 kg/ha to 2,187/ha)
-Coordinated effort of wider community for solution of field burning problem , emergence of community
plan to address the problems and conservation zones of 1,000 metres along the creek
-Observable increased number of fishes species in the creek and better water quality
2. The project was visited on May 13, 2005, with following findings and observations:
Through briefing by project members, capacity-building activities had resulted in the production of organic fertilizer, the practice of integrated farming and establishment of fish conservation zone in the village and cultivated fields. The capacity-building activities were carried out in groups at a centre after which each participating family put into practice at his own premises/plots.
The village as well as its many surrounding ones were established under the resettlement scheme of the government about 15 years back. Situated near the Phu Pha Marn National Park, conflict with the government on land used had been a chronic issues for a decade , where communities had to stage demonstration and protest, till the Land Reform Scheme intervened.
Even though the communities were established and settled for only a comparatively short period of time , it was observed that local cultural tie was fairly outstanding. For example, they were able to maintain and conduct community-based study on variety of native rice species, a quality uncommon to average northeastern communities. In addition, it was observed that many organizations, both private and public had been providing support and cooperation to the development process of the group.
The project leaders related that all other proposed activities had been completed which included production of fodders , mushroom from rice straw and production of organic fertilizer .Owing to time constraint, the visiting team did not witnessed such production, except some sample. Together with THA-03-18 and THA-03-04, situated in the same ecosystems, the project were now planning participatory evaluation upon completion within a few months.
Note: the project planned to conduct participatory evaluation upon completion in November 2005.
III. The completion report was recieved on July 5 , 2006, with following details:
Activities carried out :
1. Holding seminars/workshops/training session on both technical and institutional issues.
2.Putting in to practice what are learnt from seminars /workshop
3. Proclaiming fish conservation zone in Huay Sai Nang Creek
Results:
1. 30 families participating in capacity building process and putting what being learnt into practice
2. Suitable agro-waste(rice straw) disposal as feed @ 150 tons/year , as fertilizer @ 128 tons/year
3. Avoidance of burning of straw for 200 tons/year
4. 100 families participating in capacity building process and putting what being learnt into practice
5. Emergence of six organic fertilizer-producing group with 4,000 kilograms being produced
6. Yearly reduction of chemical fertilizer being 80% among target population
7. produced at least 200 litres of organic insect repellant
8. Emergence of Organic Rice Producing Group with 32 members
9. Emergence of community plan on summer fire prevention, environmentally-friendly production and
conservation of local water course
10.Demarcated conservation zone of 1,000-metre long along the creek with additional 5,000 native
trees from plantation
Dissemination / Public Relation of Project
During May 2005, every Saturday 18:00-19:00 , community Radio for People of Srichomphu (101.25 Mhz) aired project activities regarding conservation zone and reforestation of native trees.
Participatory Evaluation:
Participants: 45 persons comprising project leaders and members, teachers, and representatives
from concerned TAO / government agencies
Methods: 1. Producing dissemination document on results of activities
2. In-dept interviewing of Individuals and groups
3. Open forum submitting project results , soliciting reflection from participants.
Impact: The project prompted the practice of sufficiency economy among target population,
gradually detaching themselves from mono quick cash crops. Evidence is witnessed
through:
1. Substantial plantation of native species on marginal forest land including native
species
2. Revival of 20 native paddy species and complete renounce of chemical fertilizer
by 32 families
3. Energetic fire control by these families
4. One surrounding village followed the example of fish conservation zone
Future Plan: Community and project activities would be kept on with additional renewable energy
application such as biogas and biomass through sustainable fire-woods consumption
