Project activities are directly concerned what target population is doing for their living.
Notable Community Participation
Target population and the local academic institute have been working together in identiying, analysing and addressing the pressing environmental problems.
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
Target population is indigenous people.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
There are activities to promote both local and global environment conservation.
Capacity - Building Component
There are several components on capacity building in project activities.
Project Results
I. The progress report was received by hand on Mar 28 , 2005 , with following details:
Activities carried out:
1.Building capacity of target population through skill training , workshops and study tour on the use and production of organic fertilizer
2. Putting into practice what would be learnt in 1- producing organic fertilizer and turning the fertilizer from powdered form to pellet
3.Building organic production facility and putting into use
4. Building capacity of target population through workshop and study tours on the use of solar energy at community-scale
5. Building solar ovens, solar dryers solar cookers and solar water distillation
6. Compiling local knowledge in target area
7. Building capacity and skill of target population on handicraft and plant propagation for subsistence
8. Disseminating the compiled local knowledge
Some evinced results:
1. 100 participating families are capable of producing organic fertilizer at 500 kg./family/month, organic solution for insect repelling at 20 litres/family/month.
2. 70 % of target population adopt new, environmentally-friendly approach in agricultural practice
3. Evinced increased capacity and positive behavioral change on application of chemical substance among target population
4. 50 participating families gain insight on application of solar energy at household level.
5. Reduction of fire-wood consumption by 30 %
6. Additional 10 families adopting and practicing the use of solar energy
7. 100 community members with increased capacity and awareness on local approach
8. 50 % improvement on skill of the group
9. 30 % reduction trend on the use of forest resources
10.Availability of more than 100 species of vegetation in the location
II. On April 23, 2005, the NC and two members of NSC paid a visit to the project. The findings and observation could be summarized as follows:
The premises of Baan Ngiew Mai School in Therng District of Chiangrai Province served as the
venue for the evaluation and meeting. Participants included project members, community
leaders, members of Tambol Administrative Organization, a representative from the Office
of Educational Area 4 of Chiangrai Province, school staff, the abbot of Wat Ngiew Mai Temple, and one project leader from another year-5 project ( THA-03-14/ Integrated Farming for Environment of Phatthalung Province ) from Phatthalung Province.
The number of participants was estimated at 70.
In a fairly modernized style, the activities , output and some evinced impact of the project
were presented on a video , followed by the enumeration of future plans for each activity.
The whole assembly was then shown the output of activities comprising an organic compost
facility, a solar dryer set and demonstrated local approaches for sustainable use of natural
resources for reducing expense. Through their active discussion, participants, by their were observed to learn from one another.
The climax of the following discussion session seemed to be on the comment of the a
representative from the office of Educational Area 4 , in which the replication of project
idea and practices would be encouraged among 160 schools under the authority of the
office. The NC, two members of NSC and the representative of THA-03-14 also gave their
observation and suggestion to conduct holistic community development activities for
sustainability.
In average rural Thai community, the three-pronged cooperation of the three institutes ,i.e.
schools, temple and communities has long been regarded as one of the telling factors
affecting the smoothness of a project in a village. Even as Baan Ngiw Mai possessed
charismatic quality before the intervention of GEF/SGP, the three-pronged cooperation
seemed to play an outstanding role.
III. The completion report was received on December 6, 2007 , with following details:
Activities carried out:
1.Building capacity of target population through skill training , workshops and study tour on the use and production of organic fertilizer , insect repellant , their application to reverse land degradation and solar energy for heat
2.Putting into practice what would be learnt in 1- producing organic fertilizer and turning the fertilizer from powdered form to pellet
3.Building an organic production facility and one solar dryer and putting into use
4.Building capacity of target population through workshop and study tours on the use of solar energy at community-scale
5. Compiling local knowledge in target area
6. Building capacity and skill of target population on handicraft and native plant propagation for subsistence
7. Disseminating the compiled local knowledge
Results:
1.Increased awareness and technical capacity of 120 participating members witnessed through production of fertilizer at 500kg./family/month, organic solution for insect repelling at 20 litres/family/month.
2.About 70 % of target population adopt new, environmentally-friendly approach in agricultural practice
3.Increased technical capacity of 50 members on application of solar energy at household ?
reducing fire-wood consumption by 30 % and replication in five surrounding villages
4.Availability of more than 100 species of vegetation in the location
Future Plan : The school will keep on activities on learning foundation , focusing on application of local knowledge , sufficient livelihood and moral activities for environment conservation.
