Addressing Local Environmental Problems by Local Approaches
Addressing Local Environmental Problems by Local Approaches
Situated in a flat plain of mountainous northern region of the country, with comparatively limited cultivated land, community members in target villages earn their living by practicing agriculture with fire-woods as cooking. Of the cultivated lands , 45 % are for paddy, 39 % other mono-crop (mainly corn), and 16 % orchard. Majority of these lands are located in watershed area of Khun Huay Ngiew Creek of Ing River which is an integral ecological part of the Mekhong River.

Target population applied a lot of chemical substances in agricultural practices. In the previous year data, members of two villages spent more than Baht: 90,000: on chemicals just to get rid of paddy-
eating crabs, 164 tons of chemical fertilizers and 3,990 litres of pesticide. This prevalent practice has consequently and gradually resulted in land degradation in term of loss of soil structure and soil erosion and ailing health of community members. In the year 2002, Chiangrai Provincial Land Development had measured PH value of the soil in the location and found the value to be 3.8 to 4.6 ? requiring urgent attention and reversal.

In reversal of the degradation, the project had initiated the facility for manufacturing the organic fertilizer , organic solution and insect repellant. The facility would contribute to the reduction of chemical substances, reversal of land degradation, and increased community self-reliance. As to the students, the facility would contribute to group learning process, building awareness and capacity, and generating income during class. In addition, the project had initiated an approach to use fire-wood in a sustainable way by demonstration of applying solar energy partially replacing fire-wood at household level, which would contributing to stabilizing the emission of greenhouse gas.

Project participants and/or beneficiaries:

1.Ngiew Tambol Administrative Organization
2.Two Tambol Public Health Stations
3.Therng District Agricultural Office
4.Chiangrai Provincial Land Development Station and Chaingrai Provincial Fishery Station
5.Chaingrai Provincial Council
6.Agricultural Mobile Unit ,Area 5 Chiangrai
7.Chiangrai Provincial Non-formal Education Centre

Activities to be carried out under project:

1.building capacity of target population through skill training , workshops and study tour on the use and production of organic fertilizer
2.putting into practice what would be learnt in 1- producing organic fertilizer and turning the fertilizer from powdered form to pellet
3.building capacity of target population through workshop and study tours on the use of solar energy at community-scale
4.building solar ovens, solar dryers solar cookers and solar water distillation
5.compiling local knowledge in target area
6.building capacity and skill of target population on handicraft and plant propagation for subsistence
7.disseminating the compiled local knowledge

Anticipated Results/Immediate output of Project:

1.About 100 participating families are capable of producing organic fertilizer at 500 kg./family/month, organic solution for insect repelling at 20 litres/family/month.
2.About 70 % of target population adopt new, environmentally-friendly approach in agricultural practice
3. About 50 participating families gain insight on application of solar energy at household level.
4. Reduction of fire-wood consumption by 30 %
5. Additional 10 families adopt and practice the use of solar energy
6. About 100 community members are well trained and capable of retrain others
7. About 50 % improvement on skill of the group
8. About 30 % reduction trend on the use of forest resources
9. Availability of more than 500 species of vegetation in the location
