Community-Scale Energy Management of Surin Province
According to one survey on the potential of Surin Province on community-scale energy planning in 1999, the entire province consumed 111.11 million litres of liquid fuels, 8,584 million kilogrammes, 320 million kw-hrs, ( the respective figure for 2001 was 325). As for charcoal, rural communities consumed 558 kilogrammes/year/family.A yearly approximation, Surin Province uses 41,610 tons/year of charcoal.
Thailand, in the year 1999, constituted 1 % of the world total in term of energy consumption. This percentage was classified as 42 % from liquid fuels, 26 % from renewables, 17 % from natural gas, 9 % from lignite, 3 % from imported coal and 3 % from imported electricity.
Project participants and/or beneficiaries:
1.Surin Sustainable Energy Working Group is the focal point of project management providing technical supports on alternative energy
2.NET Foundation is the secretariat of the working group, working with target communities
3.Sustainable Energy Project of Alternative Technology Association, as technical advisor
4.Srikhoraphum District Agricultural Office, providing resources persons for charcoal-making
5.CBOs? in target area are primary beneficiaries
Activities to be carried out under project:
1. Conducting survey and study on potentiality of energy consumption in Ban Thung Bua
2. Planning energy management for Ban Thung Bua through open forum
3. Disseminating data & information on Potentiality of Surin Province on sustainable energy management through open forum
4.Building 20 units of charcoal-making kiln by using 200- litres drums
5. Putting into use 100 units of high-efficiency stoves
6. Conducting training on electrical energy conservation
7. Planting trees for use
8. Holding six meetings for the working group and concerned parties in Surin Province
9. Conducting three mobile energy forums
Anticipated Results/Immediate Outputs of Project:
1. Compiled inventories on energy consumption at community and provincial level to base upon
2. At least 20 persons capable of conducting survey and record on energy consumption at both level
3. At least 156 persons gaining insight of community and global energy situation
4. Emergence of the followings:
-community participatory energy management plan
-approach for cooperation on sustainable energy management among concerned parties
5. About 156 families as users of 20 kilns with by-product as wood vinegar to be used in agricultural practices saving fire-woods by 20 % and having as by product wood vinegar one litre/ burn
6. Reduced energy consumption (fire-woods) of about 30 %
7. Total of 1,560 new trees for fire-wood and other uses
8. Additional network members with common approach and practice on sustainable energy management of the province
9. At least 100 participants in each forum understanding energy situation and learning
