COMMUNITY SEEDBANKING OF INDIGENOUS FOOD CROPS (ROOTCROPS AND LEGUMES)
COMMUNITY SEEDBANKING OF INDIGENOUS FOOD CROPS (ROOTCROPS AND LEGUMES)
The project aims to undertake community-based activities for the seedbanking of rootcrops and legumes to ensure availability and abundance of planting materials, hence food security is sustained. Target for retrieval, collection, propagation and conservation shall be 32 varieties of legumes and 15 varieties of root crops, which are the basic food crops in the project sites.Apart from conserving food crop diversity, the project shall directly address livelihood concerns since high quality planting materials shall be made available in the locality.

The project sites are upland communities in three (3) municipalities of Benguet that still use traditional varieties of food crops, and IKSPs are still practiced in these sites. Although, the old folks are alarmed that these are slowly being lost over the years. One of the project sites (Barangay Lusod) is located within the buffer zone of the Mt. Pulag National Park. It was also one of the project sites of the SGP-funded project in the pilot phase that focused on the documentation of indigenous knowledge and practices (IKSPs) on biodiversity conservation.
