Integration of Local Community Needs & Conservation of Environmental and Agricultural Resources in al 'Eina and That Ras

That Ras Social Development Society in Al Mazar Al Janoubi/ Karak governorate south of Jordan will implement this project in Al ?Eina area which constitutes a micro eco-system of special importance which has been subject to gradual degradation leading to a decrease in agricultural production of important agro-biodiversity special to the area, in turn leading to negative impacts on local community?s living situation.

Activities will include water harvesting and soil conservation measures in Al?Eina to upgrade the efficiency of using available water springs and rain water. Other components of the project will involve building the capacity of the NGO and the local community. Training and awareness activities will be conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Faculty of Agriculture at Mu?tah University. The NGO will also use the revolving fund system to fund individual projects in order to broaden beneficiary base and insure sustainability.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Public awareness activities consist an important component of this project, and will be organized in cooperation with Mu'ta University and the Department of Rangeland.

Gender Focus

The NGO has started recently to include women members, women will be encouraged to participate in project activities.

Notable Community Participation

The project was designed in coordination and close consultation with local community in order to insure that the needs of the local community are well taken into consideration. As most of the activities will be done on the farm or household level, community participation will be insured throughout all phases of the project.

Capacity - Building Component

The project will provide the NGO with the necessary communication equipment needed for their community outreach programs. The necessary training and awareness activities for NGO and target group members will be provided in cooperation with the Rangeland Department and the Faculty of Agriculture at the Mu?ta University.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The rehabilitation of the farms, introduction of soil conservation measures and water harvesting will lead to improving farm production in terms of quality and quantity and that would have a positive impact on community's livelihoods.

Project Results

In an area of 3000 dunums, the following activities were accomplished, with 68 direct and 340 indirect beneficiaries as follows:

- 22 cement reservoirs to store spring water during water flow time which helps in controling irrigation of the farms in the area.
- 33 water cisterns were completed for the same purpose as above.
- 13 drip irrigation projects to serve some of the farms were also supported.

The NGO now continues to fund similar activities in the same area, using the money paid back by beneficiaries, since all activities were supported using a revolving fund system.

After this project was approved and operational, 3 other projects were supported by the SGP in the same area and contributed to enhancing the impact of SGP supported intervention in this special micro-ecosystem.
