Agri-Support - Restoration of part of Save River Catchment in Ward 17 and 18 of Makoni District
the upstream of Save river is affected by environmental degradation which has resulted in less sustained river flows and high flooding potential which has increased the vulnerability of the agro-ecological system in the entire basin.extensive deforestation and environmental degradation resulting fro population pressure and over grazing has also meant diminished biodiversity and increasingly pressurized soil and land resources.the communities in this arid and semi arid region depend on agriculture and environmental products for livelihood.pressure fro population increase , HIVAIDS and environmental degradation ha had impact on poverty, food security, nutritional availability, household income, biodivesityand survival coping strategies.
project objectives
the major objective is to apply improved indegenious knowledge systems for enhanced natural resources management, environmental restoration and improved livelihoods of the community of the Save river basin.

-identifying stakeholdersat local regional and national levels to be part of the project
-develop a long term intergrated institutional framework
-enhance local capacity and leadership skills to manage the project
-establishing a nursery
-marketing of products
-establish and support plantations

-a long term intergrated institutional frame work
-gullies reclaimed and conservation practises adopted
-higher incomes of participants accruing directly to the community through sales of commercial indegenious produce and product marketing and profit sharing scheme
-plantation of 10000 indegenious plants from a minimum of 30 economically useful varieties
-established 30 ha of endegenious organic cropping of sorrel and roselle

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
80% of the project participants are women who will play an active role in the production, processing and marketing of indigenous tree products. This will help to supplement their income for fending for the family since at the moment they are heavily involved in agricultural production which at times gives them minimal returns when there is drought.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Agri-Support Network and Naku na Tano will assist the comunity in processing the indigenous plants to produce natural food products which include nutraceutical food additives, natural preservatives and natural food fertilisers. These products will be marketed at both the local and regional market (SAPC region) and wil be an opportunity for the community to raise income for the improvement of their livelihoods.
