Tongwe Integrated Catchment Management Programme
The Tongwe project is an integrated programme that encompasses aspects of renewable energy, catchment protection of Limpopo International River, rehabilitation of degraded lands, biodiversity conservation, seed multiplication and income generation. Livelihoods will be improved through sustainable agriculture programme, small livestock production and marketing of this produce in the local area and in Bulawayo.
project objectives
-to improve the Tongwe community`s capacity to mange development and engage in the sustainable utilization and conservation of natural resources through establishment of the Tongwe development association and development of its legal and policy frame work
-to reduce the community `s dependency on wood fuel as the major source of energy to meet household energy needs through the use of renewable energy obtained from biogas digesters.
-to equip the participating communities with knowledge and skill to manage the Tongwe river catchment , conserve and enrich the biodiversity of te environs of the river
-to improve the livestock producers` capacity to manage grazing lands and engage in the production of better quality and quantities of small livestock
- to increase the community`s food security situation through improved access to small grains seeds
-to document the projects best practices, processes and procedures in both print and video format.

-tongwe community and traditional leadership aware and capable of managing the integrated program
-15 biogas builders trained and capable to construct biogas digester
-heifer pass on scheme operational with an initial 20 heifers to benefit 20 families in the biogas project
-major gullies reclaimed
-proper livestock management and sustainable grazing patterns instituted.
-output of small stock producing groups increased by 60%

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Heifer Project International which s the key partner in this project will provide heifers for each family. These wil benefit the group through provision of milk, meat and manure for their gardens. They are also in production of small grain (millet, rapoko andthe inercrops) which haveenhanced their diets.
Gender Focus
Most of the men in this area have gone to look for employment in South Africa. This project has focus on women and youth who at the moment are struggling to eke a lviing from the arid environment.
