Sustainable Development Strategy for a Rural Community of the Cerrado Estratégia de Desenvolvimento Sustentável para uma Comunidade Rural do Cerrado

The Gameleira Agrarian Reform Settlement will have its development promoted with basis on sustainability, in this project. Capacity-builidng courses will target assotiativism, contributing to nutritional enhancement for the families and building awareness about conservational practices, preservation of nature and local potential for tourism. Agroecology, agroextractivism, ecotourism and cooperativism will therefore be explored.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

40 people will be trained in agroecology, for the implementation of community organic gardens. A cooperativism and assotiativism course will also be offered for 40 people, covering topics such as community organization. 40 pelople will be trained in agroextractivism for forest management of local native species. 30 women will be trained in enriching and diversifying the diets of families in the community. Last but not least, 30 monitors will be trained in ecotourism.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Environmental protection and an alternative source of income are the goals of this project.

Notable Community Participation

The project was an idea originating from a group of 50 families in the commuity. They are committed to improving production and sale of native fruit and grains through the adoption of the practices explored in the scope of the project.

Gender Focus

This project is run by women, members of the association who seek to insure the propeer implementation of the proposal.

Project Results

In the first stage of the project, 3 workshops took place for community mobilization. The importance of cooperation with high respect for differences was emphasized in the first, while the second contained a discussion about the importance of water spring and biodiversity conservation and alternative production practices and sustainable development. The third was based on the construction of rules for use of the plant nursery and responsibilities involved. 20 families were involved in the process, with awareness built about the concepts of biodiversity, sustainable development, natural resources and the Cerrado, as well as an appreciaiton for group work. The importance of the plant nursery in light of the newly-built concepts reinforced the community's commitment to the success of the project. Two pedagogical brochures were produced in order to offer the information from the workshops in an easier to understand format. Native and exotic fruit seed collection was started. The community members were able to learn how to deal with differences of opinion within the group, due to disagreement on the donation of wood by the Association for construction of the nursery. Furthermore, difficulties with Brazilian bureaucracy served as a lesson on the rules and regulations imposed by law in Brazil, due to problems with granting legal rights to a community member for performing bank account transactions in the name of the Association.
