Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
The local community through the Village Forest Protection Committees (VFPC), SHGs and farmers have actively participated and shared responsibilities in all the training programmes, nature walk and wild fruit trade organized by the NGO under the project.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The project ahs demonstrated the improved methods and techniques by involving local community and linking sustainable livelihoods to GEF focal area by promoting 7 women self-help groups in selected area (eastern fringes of western ghat falls in Sirsi taluk, Uttara kannada District, Karnataka). Around 84 women have started saving and taking loan from formal banks and started their own small-scale enterprises while participating in the project. Their knowledge on conservation efforts has enhanced and few women have started raising few plants in their backyards. The project also encouraged few youths to take up nurseries in small scale of few selected fruits and they are now showing interest in conserving fruit trees in the village eco system.
