On farm conservation of Yam (Dioscorea sp) diversity in Malabar eco- region in India.
The purpose of the project is to develop a participatory mangrove management model which will be replicable for application in other similar situations for macro level effect.
The main objectives of the project are:-
? To develop land based alternatives incluiding bamboo cultivation for local communities dependent on mangroves for firewood, fencing and house construction.
? To undertake training and capacity building exercises for local communities in sustainable utilization of mangroves by undertaking micro-enterprises with locally available resources.
? To create village level fund for sustainable livelihoods of communities and sustainable management of mangroves.
? To generate awareness on the importance of ecological benefits of mangroves as sancturies and nursery grounds for fishery resources and as barriers against cyclones and storms.
? To develop joing mangrove management plans involving the local communities and forest department for better management of forest in future.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Awareness on the importance of mangroves forests and its sustainable management, alternatives for mangrove dependency, benefits of SHGs and micro-enterprises will be generated. Mangrove concervation clubs will be organized in all schools in the mangrove areas to integrate conservation with education. Folk media, wall paintings and audio-visuals will be organized and developed.
Notable Community Participation
Community will be involved right from the beginning of the project. Microplans will be developed, implemented and monitored by village level institutions incluiding the traditional leaders and panchayat members. The microplan activities will be implemented through a joint bank account in which executive member of the village level institutions will be a joint signatory.
