Enhancing Livelihoods and Conserving Mountain Environment in Marginalised areas of the Himalayas.
The practices of extracting excessive biomass from forests and poor land management practices have begun to threaten the fragile mountain ecosystem. 60% of the families in the hills use torchwood and kerosene for lighting their houses, as power grid lines have not reached many of these areas. Village Pinswar is one such village that is about 18 km away from the nearest power grid line. Excessive land degradation and deforestation in this village has triggered recurrent landslides and floods. The problems of the village are remoteness and marginality, poverty, drudgery, lack of infrastructure and awareness and over dependence on environment for livelihoods. The purpose of the project is to provide community owned solutions for using renewable sources of energy to reduce biotic pressures on fragile mountain environment and providing opportunities for supplementary livelihoods to people living in remote areas of the Himalayas.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
A 25 KW micro hydropower plant as a run off the river scheme at Ter stream, will be built with about 30% contributions from the community. The village level grass root engineers will do the commissioning and the wiring of households. The cost of wiring the household will be borne by the community members. To enable the community to derive maximum benefit of the electricity, Self Help Groups will be formed for undertaking income generation activities and credit facilities. Networks will be formed with institutions like NABARD for training, loans and refinancing to these SHGs.
Project sustainability
A Village Energy Committee will be set up that will be responsible for managing the community?s collections and contributions. The community will contribute about Rs.30,000 in cash for the project in addition to labour. A cadre of youth will be trained as grass root engineers to construct and manage the power station on his or her own. The management will be without any external financial assistance, through the monthly tariff collected from the households.
