Establishment of fodder bank to promote grassland biodiversity and for sustainable drought relief.

The following are the major activities of the project:
? To establish a community based management committee along with scientific experts for implemtation of project.
? To develop 93.31 acres of government wasteland already identified for the establishment of fodder crop.
? To cultivate wasteland with indigenous varities of fodder crops like Maize, Bajra etc.
? A three tier system of fodder development will be established for the continuous availability of fodder.
? To produce and preserve the fodder in the form of silage or hay and chaffed straw to meet the fodder requirement in the summer months.
? To supply fodder to the local small and marginal farmers and land less poor. Allow grazing of animals in demarked area of fodder bank for mutual benefits.
? To establish fodder seed bank to supply seeds for the local famers to establish fodder plots in their villages and farmlands.

Project Characteristics and Results

Notable Community Participation

A community based management committee was formed after conduct of PRA in the villages nearby the project site. Different SHGs such as farmers clubs, women thrift groups (DWCRA/Indira Kranti Pathakam of State Government) were involved in several occasions in the growing, harvesting, processing and preservation of fodders at the project by the project leader.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Because of the growing of several types of fodders in one particular locality a continuous livelihood can be provided by employment, by same of fodder slips/seeds by availability of seed material both for consumption (sustainability) and for sale to other needy farmers. This was amply proven under the present project where besides educating the farmers, they were also provided employment as well as fodder in the form of seed, slips, hay and silage through Fodder for Work program. Hence the sustainable livelihood can be generated under the project [provided financial support for the successful season-to-season operations are provided to the farmers.

Capacity - Building Component

Local capcities were enhanced mainly through employement generation at the project site. The project created employement of 3323 man days in implementing various activities of the project. The capacity building component was achieved in diverse means under the project. Several methods adopted in this project were training of villagers, creation of awareness about the ways and means of utilizing the fodders both during abundance and scarcity periods. This was made possible through the training programmes, workshops, field visits, and educational trips of the farmers for the nearby remunerative and successful dairy farms and distribution of pamphlets in vernacular language.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Safe and pleasant environmental probabilities were achieved for creating ecological balance, in promoting wasteland development, while managing the cropping systems of grass land for mass safety of the field and nearby, promoting, understanding the culture among the farmers by their participatory involvement in the operating schedules.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The indigenous people apart from some of the migratory people implemented most of the project activities. The problems such as ethnic, cultural, historical did not affect the project at any point of time. Hence because of the poor economic condition of the local people could not bestow their full attention and as already explained several impacts were observed because of the project in this area.

Gender Focus

The participation of the communities, involving women SHGs and farmers, during each stage of the project has given them an insight into the techniques of wasteland management and fodder production and preservation alongwith fodder biodiversity conservation.

Replication of project activities

The uncultivable waste lands can be brought under fodder cultivation which is otherwise left fallow by similar kind of efforts in other areas as well.

? Around 60 acres of land was developed for fodder cultivation.
? Construction of silage bank, hay shed and germplasm bank.
? Organized many exposure trips for farmers.
? Distributed fodder seeds and slips.
? Activities like procurement of seeds, planting etc. were completed successfully.
