Establishment of a composting plant

A solid waste composting plant has been established in Multan which essentially required the completion of the following activities.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between Community Development Resource Center (CDRC) as representative of the communities in Multan and Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) Multan City as part of the government in order to establish a public-community partnership. This was mainly achieved for four reasons. Firstly, to develop a partnership with the concerned government agency, secondly to make the project sustainable and thirdly to ensure the supply of municipal solid waste and fourthly for capacity building of TMA in solid waste collection.

Different plant components were manufactured/fabricated by a private engineering concern in Lahore, which were later transported to Multan.

Land measuring about 8 acres was provided by TMA for installation of the plant.

Plant installation was completed, which was followed by the dry run tests. Major improvements in functions and systems were made as a result of the dry tests.

Plant was finally made ready to operate on regular basis.

An application was submitted to Multan Electricity Company (MEPCO) for an industrial connection. After the preparation of the feasibility study and meeting other requirements a demand note was finally issued, which was promptly deposited in the bank. It is now expected to provide the electricity connection making it possible to operate the plant on regular basis.

A space for laboratory has also been established on the plant site for regular and on-site testing of the compost.

A number of ancillary facilities have also been constructed/completed to facilitate the regular operation of the plant, as follows:

A building consisting of room for office, laboratory, machine tool store, switch gear room and a guard room.

A boundary wall of about 1000 feet length dividing between WASA disposal station and the plant land.
A water pump
A brick soling bed for area covered by the plant and surroundings.
Two steel gates on boundary walls from two sides. One for the solid waste trolleys and the other for the staff and visitors entrance.
Preparation of land in for experimental cultivation.
