On September 11 , 2005, the project was visited. The findings and observation were as followed:

The project premises situated amid paddy field accommodated facilities for producing
organic fertilizer, nursery and charcoal producing kiln. It was reported that since November
2004 , nearly 20,000 saplings from the nursery were transferred to be planted both in
public marginal lands and in marginal land in paddy fields of project members. This
was not enough, as some members related they still wanted some more of other native
species on their marginal lands. While activities on re-vegetation and compost application
seemed going on satisfactorily, construction of charcoal ?producing kiln was only in its
beginning stage. It was reasoned out that the contractor was still busy with other jobs
and would begin his work in November and construction would last for a month.

Visiting one member?s plot in Baan (village) None Thongchai found various kinds of native
species trees standing in marginal land , many of whom were edible. Actually, the member
had been practicing this for a few years and satisfied with the output.

A comparatively well-maintained marginal public land of about 12 ha was also found at Baan
Thon Kham Huad. Majority of trees planted in this plot since last November were seen
thriving at various growth, from three-metre tall to one foot.

Even though the proposed re-vegetation activity was found in progress, project members still
needed additional capacity - building activities on nursery process- to ensure substantive
activities. It was advised project members visit and learn from its year-5 neighbour ,THA-03-11,
that was currently addressing ecological degradation of the same Mekhong River.

Concerning the delayed construction of charcoal-producing kiln, the NC proposed an
option with another design which might require simpler construction technique , and be
carried out successfully by project members.
