Lutewele Coffee Farmers Association (LUCOFA)

Lutewele Irrigation Project is located in Ludewa District, approximately 700km from the capital of Dar es Salaam. The projects is owned and operated by an association of farmers which has 35 members. Its main objective is to expand the command area in order to increase crop production.Also expand and consolidate a Cooperative Irrigation Scheme for enhanced poverty reduction initiative.

The project is targetted to assist poor people at Itundu village. Almost all the people there are natives.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will increase coffee production. In addition to increasing coffee production, irrigation water will be used to modernize villagers' shelter by transforming pole houses to brick houses.

There is no large GEF project in the areas.

Project Results

(1) Project has put in place a community irrigation scheme covering 29 acres

(2) Project has supplied piped water to over 5,000 people in the township of Mlangali.

(3) Irrigation farming has increased crop production and family incomes by 50%.

(3) Pipes water has improved community health and sanitation in the area 80%

(4) Project water was use in the construction of a secondary school in the area.

(5) A total of 41 improved houses have been constructed.
