Põo cu´catiji: The Return of the Ema to the Cerrado
Põo cu'catiji: A Volta da Ema para o Cerrado
Emu will be reaised by the Krikati Indigenous Community in an attempt to recover the population of this Cerrado species. Social and environmental conditions will thus be improved, with the generation of alternate sources of income and alternative sources of food, as well as a recovery of traditional knowledge and habits of this indigenous community located in Montes Altos, state of Maranhão. More specifically, awareness building and mobilization for the community are sought on the subject of the social-environmental importance of emus. Participation of the school children in the project for environmental education is another objective. The traditional knowledge of elders will be emphasized, by putting them in charge of emu management. Lastly, information exchange with the Kanela Indians will be sought for enrichment of the experience.
