Consolidation and Articulation of the Sustainable Production Project in the Rural Settlement of Andalucia Consolidação e Articulação do Projeto Produção Sustentável no Assentamento Andalucia

The consolidation of activities in the Andalucia Agrarian Reform Settlement is the goal of this project. The relationship between this settlement and other settlements as well as other organizations in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, will be strengthened, promoting a synergy for the isolated and asynchronous sustainable intiatives. More specifically, wild collection of native species will be strengthened, making use of the mapping of species and study of productive potential done in the Andalucia settlement, autonomy for weavers will be encouraged, certification for the production from the settlement nucleus will be sought, tourism will be explored, the production nucleus will be expanded, and media coverage of the project's acitivities will take place.

Notable Community Participation

The smallholders in the Andalucia Agrarian Reform Settlement, who are responsible for the ongoing activities of Cerrado conservation and sustainable use tied with alternative income generation are responsible as well for the design of this project.

Capacity - Building Component

There will be a training course on the production chain, emphasizing the diffusion of native fruit use and commercialization. A training course on developing tourism will also be offered for 15 people, covering topics such as ecology, legislation, environmental education for tourism, field practices, and animal and plant observation techniques. A standardization workshop will be offered for the weavers.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

This project will promote and strengthen existing activities in the area of Cerrado conservation and sustainable use with alternative generation income for the families involved.

Project Results

At the first stage, the consolidation project, which intends to continue the previous SGP project for the Andalucia Settlement, inaugurated the Center for Production, Research and Capacity Building of the Cerrado (CEPPEC). This center has managed to artouse the interest of the community as a whole. The positive results of the first SGP project, as well as the activities planned for this second project were publicized in various meetings in the municipalities of Nioaque, Sidrolândia, Miranda, Jardim, Bonito, Campo Grande, Dourados, Itaporã, and others. The organizations and the people invovled were identified during these meetings for discussions regarding an integrated plan for the state in activities such as wild collection, organic production and handcrafts. The Agricultural Family School (EFA) was contacted in an attempt to approach its public of young adults residing in Argrarian Reform Settlements. The strengthening of bonds with the school is strategic for the success of the project. Concrete activities which took place in this period are: wild collection of Baru (Dipteryx alata); rural tourism in Andalucia; weaving workshop; diffusion and communication activities. The change in attitude toward the environment is easily perceptible in the inhabitants of the settlement. Academic work and the press in the region have seen a sharp increase in the inclusion of the Cerrado in its activities.
