Conservation and propagation of threatened banana species through tissue culture, composting, preparation of banana food items, banana fibre production and publishing a booklet. Rambukkana Divisional Secretariat is situated in the Kegalle district. Rambukkana has a very unique climate situation where the soil is very fertile and suitable for bananna cutivation. It has been reported that nearly 200 traditional banana varieties were in this area. Due to various reasons most of these varieties have disapperared. the main reasons being- farmers cultivating banana varieties that have a commercial value only, differnet diseases that effect the growth of banana, unavailability of traditional banana seeds.The project hopes to solve these main isssues by producing traditional banana seeds using tissue culture and by providing maximum economical benefit to banana cultivating farmers.
