Irtysh is a transboundary river, and it?s a unique water source for many big cities, numerous villages and settlements of the country. At the moment according to the independent revaluation results pollution of Irtysh in East Kazakhstan is at extreme level.

The main polluting factors are industrial wastes, emergency condition of cleaning constructions in large cities, radioactive substances pollution, condominium sector wastes pollution, poor ecological culture of the population. All these negatively influence on climate conditions, landscape degradation, flood-lands desertification, fish-stocks reduction.

The purpose of the project is attraction of the local population to the activities on solving the problem by means of carrying out a number of environmental actions and large-scale information campaign. Within the project it is planned to arrange a number of meetings, to publicize information in mass-media, release of leaflets, to arrange round tables, etc. 3 voluntary initiative groups of a list of local people will be created to assist implementation the project activities.

Results are expected to be reached at the end of the project are improvement of ecological situation in Semipalatinsk, expansion of partnership between government bodies, local population, NGOs, formation of constantly operating voluntary groups, wide informing of the population about the problems.
