Organic agriculture of native orchards and agro-forestry of fodder crops for domestic animals and reforestation in Cantón Santa María de la Aldea Sanajabá, Tacaná, San Marcos
This project intends to solve the problems of lack of water sources and soil erosion, through their preservation, reforestation and organic management of nurseries, as well as of the orchards to be cultivated. Fodder crops will also be cultivated to feed domestic animals and so avoiding losing the nurseries.
Participants will cultivate Creole potatoes, broad beans and corn, along with white pine, alders, oaks, fir trees and forger species of mirasol and elderberry under an agro-forestall scheme, amounting to 111 cuerdas of land located in the highlands of the River Coatan, which has international importance ( Solanum tuberosum L., Phaseolus, Zea Mays L., Pinus tecunumani, abias guatemalensis, Quercus Acatenanguensis).
For the success of this project 37 participants will be trained on issues as environment, agro-forestry, organic agriculture, gender equity, forestall nurseries, and monitoring and evaluation of projects. For the sustainability, one part of the production will be used for seed cultivation, another part for commercialization and the other to improve the participants feeding diet.
