THE EXPANSION OF SAVE RIVER CATCHMENT PROTECTION

The expansion of Save Catchment protection project is being implemented by Gudyanga community. The group received assistance under SGP to the tune of US$29322.93 in 1998. However, some of the activities were not fully completed and this supplementary grant seeks to cover these gaps and ensure that the project is fully completed. During the first phase of the project the group managed to complete the following activities:

1) Bring awareness to the communty on protecting Save River catchment
2) Control erosion and siltation of the Save by planting mutsaa and fruit trees
3) Rehabilitation of the degraded areas through gulley reclamation
4) Soil and water conservation through sustainable farming practices
protecting baobab tree through enforcement of local by-laws by the local leadership.

The major problem encountered was that the water is not adequate to cover all the activities because of the poor water lifting mechanism. The level of production in the garden has been adversely affected and reduced.

To this end, the supplementary grant seeks to assist in getting the motor and engine for lifting the water, continued awareness raising and the implementation of an energy programme to reduce the rate of tree cutting.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

A lot of capacity was built especially in the area of how to manage the fragile environment which is also prone to drought. However, more work needs to be done in putting what was learnt into action especially the areas of catchment protection and water harvesting.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Although awareness on the global environment was raised in the previous programme, the major limitation was the area coverage. It just

Gender Focus

Initially when the project started, the majority of the recipients were women. However, they are now in the process of recruiting more men so that the project is not just a "women project" but is a project that benefits the whole community. The women have also come to realise that if they are to make any significant in-roads in the area of catchment protection they have to engage the whole community.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The area is comprised of the Ndau people and these are the target beneficiaries.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project places much emphasis on livelihood improvement as the community has already established a consolidated garden where they intend to produce vegetables when the water becomes available. They are also involved in craft production which has been a source of raising income.

Notable Community Participation

This is an expansion of the previous programme that focussed on water harvesting and installation of the irrigation infrastructure. The community actively participated in the design of the expansion project and came up with the areas that they wanted to be addressed especially completing the scheme and incorporating more villages into the programme.

Project Results

Were the objectives realized?
Most of the objectives where met. The project is on going such that the progamme is being done now and again except for the gullies which are threatening the Gudyanga community project.
