Rock Water Harvesting & Storage For Nguu Division
This project is implemented in co-operation with the Embassy of Japan. The Embassy is funding the hardware of the project (e.g. pipelines, buildings etc.) while UNDP GEF SGP is funding the software of the project (e.g. capacity building).
The aim of this project is to improve availability and accessibility to adequate water for domestic use (and, if additional water available, for kitchen gardens or nurseries) through catchment of rainwater by suitable rocks. The water will be stored in constructed water tanks and will be sold to the communities by a committee appointed to oversee the maintenance and supervision of the work. DWHH/GAA has already established such rock catchments in two other areas (Nthungui and Mwingati) with a total of 3 water tanks. The present project aims at helping the two communities plus an additional one with the construction of 6 water tanks of 300 m³ to increase the availability of fresh water.
The project area is drought prone (droughts occurring every 3-5
