Kathuni River Intake Water Project
This project is implemented in co-operation with the Embassy of Japan. The Embassy is funding the hardware of the project (e.g. pipelines, buildings etc.) while UNDP GEF SGP is funding the software of the project (e.g. capacity building).
The aim of the project is to construct an intake across Muthungue Spring at the height of Iveti Hills about 5kms from the project supply area. The water will flow by gravity from the intake through pipelines to a 100m³ tank and from there to five water points which will serve as water kiosks situated at Kathuni settlement. A VIP latrine will be constructed at each water point.
The community lies in the leeward side of Iveti Hills, a very dry area. Community members are fetching water for domestic use from the seasonal streams within the area. An average family uses 80 liters of water per day.
Rainfall in this area is inadequate and unreliable. The average annual rainfall is 600mm. This area is characterized by rolling terrain with V-shaped dry valleys. The main source of water is Muthungue Stream which originates from Iveti Hills. Some people walk up to 5kms to fetch water from this Stream which?s level is dropping due to the destruction of the catchment by the people living nearby.
The majority of the beneficiaries of this project are peasant farmers who make-up 95% of the total population. The project will benefit 960 families, consisting of an average of 8 persons. About half of these household are the existing members of the project.
The implementing NGO will:
(1) Construct intake, pipeline, 100m³ water tank, 5 water points
(2) Conduct training activities for 13 management committee members on various aspects of good leadership
(3) train 650 project members and technical team on 16 on operation and maintenance of the water scheme.
