Orhon village used to be one of the fruit growing areas in Mongolia before 1990s. There was even a state owned fruit processing factory. As the country started shifting to a market economy early 90s, many fruit plantations in Orhon were left abandoned without any care due to lack of financial resources. As fruit plantations were completely destroyed in Orhon, people often start going to nature for wild fruits and berries, where many people use destructive techniques, causing serious damages to fruit trees and bushes and sometimes they make wild fires which destroy whole mountain ranges. The project supports community initiatives and activities on re-cultivation of Sea Buckthorn fruit trees to contribute to local government efforts on rehabilitating and re-cultivating former fruit farms in Orhon village, based on local communities. Over 30,000 fruit seedlings have been raised for 2005. Selling of these tree seedlings will take place from 2006 spring. This project is to supply other SGP projects with fruit seedlings at a possible lower price. In Mongolia fruit growing is becoming a business even for bigger companies, increasing the price.
