Serzhong Water Supply and Forest Conservation Project to be implemented by Kuenphen Tshogpa (KT)in Mongar Dzongkhag for water supply to Serzhong Community Primary School (CPS), installation of Solar Lightings in CPS and installation of improved stoves in the CPS
Serzhong Community Primary School is located under Shermung geog in Mongar district. It provides primary education to 214 students from 14 villages consisting of 200 households. The community school is built by the local communities with their own contributions. The community school kitchen used traditional open stoves which consumed large quantities of firewood. There also was shortage of water supply and lack of electricity. Therefore, through SGP funding, the Kuenphen Tshogpa which consists of the representatives from the School, communities and with support from the District Administration, implemented the project to realize the following objectives:
1. Reduction of fuelwood consumption through installation of fuel-efficient stoves;
2. Improvement of water supply facility;
3. Installation of solar lightings for the community school;and
4. Plantation to improve the forest cover of the area.
The Kuenphen Tshogpa (KT) was formed in November 2003 in order to promote sustainable development in Shermung Geog (block) through environmental conservation and initiation of activities to improve the standard of living of local communities and the Serzhong Community Primary School (CPS) in particular.
Kuenphen Tshogpa carried out the following activities:
1. Installed Althaus cooking stoves, one of 100 litres capacity and two of 75 litres capacity with hot water circulation system;
2. Planted local species in one and a half acres of land in Serzhong CPS compound;
3. Conducted Environmental Education Workshop for 200 participants, one each from each households of Serzhong Community;
4. Installed Solar Lightings in the new boarding facility at Serzhong CPS;
5. Improved Water Supply Facilitiy at Serzhong CPS.
At the end of the project period the Serzong Community Primary School is equiped with:
1. 3 althaus fuel-efficient stoves with hot water circulation;
2. Solar lighting system in the CPS boarding;
3. Regular water supply available in CPS;
Besides which there is awareness created amongst the local people of Serzhong village on local and global Environmental issues, plantation has been carried out in one and half acres of land, there has been significant reduction in the consumption of fire wood.
All the project activities have been completed. Now the project aims to maintain the plantation area by fencing, carry out more plantations and raise the percentage of the survival rate of the plants.
