Great Gobi Oasis
Spring is a most valuable life-supporting source in Mongolian Gobi. By the last census held in 2004, 1484 springs over the country were completely dried up over the last 20 or so years. If this trend continues in its current speed, half the all springs in Gobi will completely be dried up over the next 10- 5 years.
The grant is given to a local herder cooperative to support their initiative to collect spring and rain waters with a small dam to combat soil erosion and desertification in the territory of bagh No. 2, Shinejinst sum of Bayanhongor aimag. Actually, the grant was supposed to support a Gobi spring and to protect the surrounding area from soil erosion and desertification. Three-tiered small hand constructed dams were made available to local herders by themselves for their survival as well as to support surrounding Gobi ecosystem with future improved state of soil conditions. Dams now successfully accumulate spring and rain waters which were lost or filtrated down to soil before they were constructed. Many different types of trees were planted near the dams and are growing well. It is a man made oasis in Mongolian Gobi desert. The man made oasis looks very beautiful during the green season in Mongolia and supports many living organisms including humans being.
