A group of nine village level resource persons (VRPs) has been built. These VRPs are well trained and are well-versed in conservation and community right related laws. They have also been trained in scientific methods for collecting, characterizing and preparing agro biodiversity for storage in gene banks. A gene bank has been established and around 600 local varieties of seeds have been conserved. A study is being conducted on effectiveness of locally available bio-pesticides on a plot of land. Plants extracts such as Tobacco, Walnut leaves, Bichchoo patra etc. has been used. The bio-pesticides have still not been popularized amongst the villagers as it is at a testing level. The organization has adopted a strategy where they are motivating farmers to grow traditional seed on 2/10th of their land and practice commercial agriculture on the rest. This is being done to ensure conservation of traditional varieties, food security and also reducing dependence on high external inputs. The organization has been advised to prepare and submit a sustainability plan for the village level seed banks that will be made in the subsequent stages of the project in addition to the gene bank. The institutions should be capacitated to undertake the implementation and the management of the seed banks. A detailed benefit sharing mechanism has to be devised with the help of these institutions in order to ensure sustainability of the program. In absence of such a short-term benefit mechanism for the villagers, the right-based campaign will be difficult to implement amongst the villagers and no ownership will be developed. During the course of discussions, the village level volunteers have also agreed to this plan of action involving institutionalization and sustainability. It was also suggested that they work with the existing SGP partners in the area and draw from their experiences in community mobilization.
