Tucumã (Astrocryum vulgare) Larva Oil: use and conservation of a resource from the Cerrado of Soure, Pará
Óleo do Bicho: manejo e valorização de um recurso dos campos cerrados de Soure, Pará
The generation of procedures for management of a coleoptera species larva oil is the objective of this project. This larva grows in seeds of Tucumã (Astrocaryum vulgare, Mart.), a palm species ubiquitous in the Cerrado and with high incidence in Soure, state of Pará. This oil has uses in popular medicine and cosmetics manufacturing, besides being used in the cuisine of the traditional extractivist comunities in Soure. Knowledge will be applied toward sustainable management and added value for the product, while families will have an alternative for income generation.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Adequate field management with control of the fruit-yielding Tucumã (Astrocaryum vulgare), control of the effect of the larvae on the seeds, monitoring of collection, keeping around 15% of the seeds on each bunch are all important steps for the conservation of this resource. Survival of the species and the development of refined oil extraction techniques are goals.
Notable Community Participation
The direct beneficiaries of this project not only took part in training workshops, but were also the protagonists in public displays of larva oil extraction science within the Caimbé Project, concluded in 2003. The community decisively encouraged the design of this project and will be the protagonists in its execution.
