Environmental Conservation in the Maranhão Cerrado: an alternative for family farmers
Conservação Ambiental do Cerrado Maranhense: uma alternativa para agricultura familiar
The objective of this project is to replenish the vegetation in degraded areas in the Buritirana Stream springs located in the Buritirana village, and the Peixe River, a Balsas River tributary. Environmental awareness building for the community and its neighbors is also an objective. The sustainable use of native Cerrado species will be proposed by ACA, suggesting the replacement of conversion of forest by alternative technologies for smallholder farming, introducing vegetables in the backyards.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The Buritirana Community, through ACA, has been searching for rational alternatives to the use of Cerrado resources. They thus offer smallholders, in a participative manner and according to agroecolgical guidelines, technologies to maximize production in their space without hte need for clearing of more vegetation and the use of fire. Degraded areas can therefore recover and environmental awareness can ensure long term survival of the biome.
