Environmental Management Training in Timbira Indigenous Lands

This project will develop environmental management capacity building activities for Krikati and Apinajé indigenous environmental agents. A plan for recovery of degraded areas and installation of demonstration modules in the Krikati area, as well as the dissemination of agroecologic management practices are all means to that end. Furthermore, the maintenance of a plant nursery in Carolina, state of Maranhão, implementation of permanent cultures and the preparation of a monitoring plan for the Apinajé area will be carried out. The formation of critical thinking in young adults is of paramount importance, for identification of negative impacts suffered by their territory and for the suggestion of feasible solutions to these problems to be locally implemented. These activities are to have a pilot character, with hopes of future replication in neighboring smallholder communities.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

10 Krikati Indigenous Environmental Agents will be trained through the design and implementaiton of a degraded area recovery plan. 30 Apinajé Indigenous Environmental Agents will be trained through environmnetal management and training.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Environmental management of the indigenous territory, as well as the critical thinking to be taught to young adults will insure the survival of the indigenous peoples' sustainable lifestyle.

Policy Influence

Influence was exerted in discussions about construction of the Estreito hydroelectric power plant in Maranhão. Furthermore, qualification of environmental agents contributes to the IBAMA Volunteer Environmental Agent Qualification Program.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

SGP made possible National Environment Fund (NEF) funding of this project.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The Apinajé and Krikati Indians are partners in the preparation and execution of this project, being the direct beneficiaries.

Notable Community Participation

The beneficiary communities will have direct and effective involvement, through monitoring and evaluation of the agents' and field technicians' activities. All stages of preparation and execution of the activities will be discussed with the Apinajé and Krikati communities. The areas to be affected by this work are to be defined during meetings with the involved villages.

This will take place with the Cerrado Fruits Project, presented by the Wyty Catë Association to the Ministry of Environment?s Demonstrative Projects in the Amazon Program.

Project sustainability

this project made contributions to sustainability of Indigenous Lands. These contributions arte feasible due to strong relationships with other projects aimed at Cerrado conservation and improved quality of life for the region?s indigenous groups.

young environmental agents were trained and will pass on the knowledge acquired, as well as continuously executing the activities carried out during project execution.

Project Results

Exchange of experiences and information among Krikati and Apinajé indigenous groups was successful and intense, as was involvement of the younger members of villages, by means of participation in capacity-building activities and workshops about the territorial situation of the Apinajés.
Collective construction of the recovery plan for degraded areas in the Krikati Land, which reached its peak in implementation of four environmental recovery areas, in which native Cerrado fruit species were planted, e.g. bacaba (Oenocarpus bacaba), juçara (Euterpe spp.), buriti (Mauritia flexuosa) and cupuaçu (Theobroma grandiflorum).
Implementation of six environmental recovery areas along the borders of the Apinajé lands took place, with planting of native Cerrado fruit species. The choice of location was meant to draw community members to these areas, assisting in monitoring of deforestation and invasions along those areas.
In all, 285 thousand hectares of Cerrado are under sustainable management, regulated by territorial management plans for the Indigenous Lands.
Five waterways were recovered by bleeding weirs that hindered the flow of water, located on springs of the Krikati Indigenous Lands. The specific methodology for recovery of these areas was developed by the community.
