ORIENTAL MINDORO MANGROVE REHABILITATION PROGRAM

The program plainly would call for replanting of mangrove species in areas along coast where former mangrove forest existed, including some inland riverine areas. However, to protect such initiative, people?s awareness would b called for. Our people are mere exploiters of our resources and its about time that they learn also that they have to tend the very resources that give support to their way of living

Destruction of mangrove is very rampant in Calapan (Oriental Mindoro) due to their conversion into their fishponds or beach resorts. Illegal fishing (dynamite fishing) is also a problem that affects the coastal areas.
The project aims to protect the remaining mangrove areas and coastal resources from further degradation through mangrove replanting, formation/strengthening of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management (FARMC) and alternative livelihoods.

The project shall also protect the coastal areas where migratory birds stay/present and explore the possibility of developing the project site for sustainable tourism.

Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

A rehabilitation of the mangrove forests in their areas would provide the poor with sustainable source of food and income and protection from the elements. The whole community will be able to benefit from the resources this ecosystem would provide.

Policy Impact

In areas which are privately owned, the proponent will enter into private memorandum of agreement with the owner for a possible long-term contract of mangrove restoration in their properties.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The creation of a people's organization would be vital for the phased-out mechanism to be instituted. As the Bantay Bakawan is formed, a gradual transfer of responsibility would be initiated for overall control of their area. Also an ADOPT-A-FOREST SCHEME will be initiated to be able to gain partnership with different sectors.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The desired effect will be the rehabilitation of the mangrove resources of the projected areas with an enlightened people eventually protecting their own resources while providing themselves with a sustainable source of food and livelihood in the long-term. Long term effect is a show of an increase in fish and other marine catch by local fisherment.

Capacity - Building Component

The educational component is a must since some peple in the area only knows how to extract from nature and not in giving back some of its living in the concerned areas.

Notable Community Participation

Through persistent action with participation of local people, educational campaign as to the importance of this type of ecosystem, with possible support of other concerned groups and individuals, they will addressed continuing destruction of mangrove resources due to erosion and destruction of marine life due to the loss of this kind of ecosystem

Project Results

Target outputs:
Should enable the provision of the initial planting materials for the area.
An educational program for the community re conservation with possible livelihood linkaging with other organization and/ or agencies from local and national government units.

EFFECTS:
Desired effect should be the rehabilitation of the mangrove resources of the projected areas with an enlightened people eventually protecting their own resources while providing themselves with a sustainable source of food and livelihood in the long term,
The long term effect should also show an increase in fish and other marine catch by the local fishermen, which should mean a better way of life for the community.
