BIODIVERSITY AND ECO- TOURISM OK!
Due to poverty, the Bugkalots in Quirino Province are forced to engage in unsustainable use of forest resources (illegal fishing, brush and burn farming and extraction of flora and fauna). These activities have contributed to forest degradation and loss of biodiversity.
The project intends to conserve the biodiversity within the ancestral domain of Bugkalots.
Activities shall include the development of alternative sources of income like sustainable tourism, capacity building, patrolling and law enforcement thru conserving the biodiversity by providing upland dwellers an alternative source of income through eco-tourism; inhabitants dependent on farming will be encourage to shift t high value crops like fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants. With higher incomes, brush and burn farming will be minimized; and while conserving biodiversity, a parallel effort to preserve the Bugkalot culture will be implemented
