Though all objectives planned for the project were reached with success, sustainability of the initiative on the long run is still cause for concern among the stakeholders. Difficulties with regulations, logistics, politics, and management delayed the operation of the plant, but these problems were all solved. Some of the partnerships planned were not realized, the distance to the processing plant made transportation expensive, labor costs were high, fluctuation in the exchange rate, and lack of a commercial strategy all affected the project. New sources of funding seem to insure continuation of the experience. CENESC was established as a result of this project. Many meetings were attended, and the processing plant was successfully constructed. The Ministry of Environment visited the project, as well as the Ministry of Agrarian Development, and the Dutch Embassy. New technologies were researched for use of the threatened species, such as charcoal, a cracking machine, oil extraction, and handcrafts. The price paid per sack of Baru went from R$3.00 to R$5.00 in 2003. It is expected to reach R$10.00 in 2005. This means higher income for the people involved in the process ? 150 were qualified during the project. The exchange of information brought benefits to communities outside the scope of the project. The increase in the cost of the nuts also meant a decrease in the cutting down of trees for use as furniture or fenceposts. 3 hectares were recovered through the regeneration consortia. The lessons learned were: community production depends on many opinions and is often slow in the implementation of activities; partnerships only work when the intended partners are truly committed to the initiative?s success; volunteer work has its limitations, so sufficient resources for remuneration must be planned in the project proposal; productive projects depending on seasonal raw materials need working capital.
